THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND EAGLES ELITE

Hear Why Toni Ann Miano Started Eagles Elite Sports...

How does one fall in love with hockey growing up in the Bronx, New York?
With 4 older male cousins, 2 brothers and 1 sister – let’s just say the skates were on my feet before I had the chance to walk.
I grew up in a rink watching my brother and cousins play hockey – while my sister was playing with her dolls in the warm room, my nose was up against the glass, shivering as I watched the game up close with my Dad. Shortly after, I got my first pair of skates.

I remember my first-time skating – I spent more time on the ice than actually skating. However, I wouldn’t get off the ice – I loved every second out there, I would try running, fall down, bash my elbow, take other people out. My Dad was tired of seeing me fall over and over so I started taking private skating lessons with a Russian skater. I would go after school 2x a week consistently for years before I played on a team. When I was 7 years old, I played on my first official team and I was the only girl – I had to travel to New Jersey along with my older brother. I’ve looked up to my brother from the first time I watched him play; he was fast and skilled and I wanted to be just like him. I continued playing boys until I was 15 years old – I always looked up to male hockey players whether it was my Dad, brother or an NHL player.
With 3 other siblings, we were constantly playing sports and going from one event to another. I played basketball, softball, roller hockey, volleyball, and soccer as well. When I was 12 years old, I knew I wanted to focus more on ice hockey and set goals to play at the next level and eventually Division I. My brother, Rocco, inspired me when he and his team won the National Championship- I wanted that medal, I wanted to be like him! As I got older, it was harder for me to excel in New York – I eventually had to part ways with home to play on girls teams.

My family and I made the decision that I needed to play against elite girls in order to be challenged and to develop. I decided to attend the North American Hockey Academy in grade 10, in Stowe, Vermont – an invitational girls hockey academy. I competed against some of the best players across the country, every day on the ice, in the weight room, in the dorms – I was constantly developing as a person and a player. I formed life-long friendships and learned lessons that I still use and cherish today! It was because of NAHA and the dedication and commitment I learned there that I made my dream of playing Division I hockey a reality. It was when I was able to represent the USA and play against Canada that it all came together.

As far back as I can remember, I was constantly setting goals. I always wanted to be better and improve and play on the top teams. My family members were my biggest fans and it wasn’t easy being away from home for months at a time. Yet they were so happy because I was playing the sport I loved. I found a passion in hockey that’s hard to compare to anything else. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to play at Boston College for 4 years. Just like when I first started skating, going to BC was not easy. It was a climb, everyday at the rink or in the classroom I had to bring my A game! I couldn’t fall behind in my academics and I had to compete for my team. Playing Division I hockey was the real deal; it was more than anything I could have imagined but you need to be fully invested. I’ll forever cherish all the memories – good and bad – all the championships we won, Hockey East, Beanpots, Frozen Four appearances. More importantly, there were barriers along the way that I had to overcome. These hardships hold an extra weight on me because I have learned my biggest and most important life lessons from them and they truly made me who I am today.

My Message to you

My message for you is that everything will work out in the end, and if it doesn’t then it’s not the end. You’re just starting an amazing journey and have the power of creating your own path! CHERISH IT!! Set goals, small and big ones along the way to keep you on the right track. If you put your mind to something and work extremely hard for it, you have the power to achieve it so believe in yourself! Ask yourself from time to time, “Am I having fun?”  That answer should be yes every time, sports should always be fun. This goes for anything else you dedicate your time and effort to. If you get to a point where it’s not fun, take a step back, take a deep breath and go back your roots and why you play hockey.

Things may get tough or you may not make a team you wished to – don’t worry – you will be stronger, learn from it and bounce back. I went through a time where I “failed” in my career. At the time, it was the worst thing that ever happened to me – I was devastated. With my family’s teammates, coaches, and mentors support I soon realized it was the best thing that ever happened to me. It taught me my biggest lesson overall and changed my perspective of life.

Shortly after that setback, I played my final season at Boston College – the best season of my life! I had one goal in mind: I wanted to be the best teammate I could be for my teammates, coaches, and my family. I wanted to represent myself to the fullest and take care of unfinished business. Coming into the season, 3 members of our team, all defensemen, were chosen to train with the USA National Team for the 2018 Olympics – that was 3 of our top players gone for the year. I never once doubted what was to come of the season, I was determined and motivated to have the best season and go all the way. We had a strong season from the start, losing very few games and everyone was meshing together – we won the Beanpot Championship against BU in overtime, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and unfortunately lost to Ohio State in the quarterfinal round.

I’ll never forget the sound of that last buzzer, the look in some of my teammate’s eyes – it was over – my journey of playing Division I had come to an end. I could easily say that was the best 4 years of my life and I wouldn’t change anything along the path. I learned so much about myself as both a player and a person – I am forever thankful for hockey being my platform to grow as a person. My advice for you here is to simply enjoy your journey! It truly flies by in a blink of an eye. Don’t take anything for granted, learn from your teammates, coaches, and family because there is so much to learn and those are the people who care the most about you.

I wanted to give back to the game I loved and inspire the next generation of female players

It didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to give back to the game I loved and inspire the next generation of female players by developing them as people and hockey players. In May of 2018, I started Eagles Elite Sports with no idea where it would go – I was willing to take the risk and pave my own future, my own path. I did two hockey lacrosse crossover camps with Kenzie Kent and fell in love with coaching quicker than ever. The excitement I saw in our players, watching them master a move they’ve been working on, seeing them fall and get right back up, seeing them compete, their smiles on the ice and field, the sweat dripping down their faces– that is why I love to coach and why I have chosen this as my path.

At one of my first camps this year, a 7-year old girl Abby came up to me after the first day – gave me the biggest hug goodbye and said “Toni!! This was the best day ever.” I’ll never forget the smile on her face walking out of the rink, cheek to cheek. The smile on her dad – I found a way to bring out the light in her and she found a love in the game I did at that age.

I can go on and on about the reassuring moments I’ve had at such a young career in my life; they never seem to get old. Coaching hockey and playing is still so surreal to me and I absolutely LOVE what I do. It is amazing to be able to work in hockey year round as a Director and Coach at the North American Hockey Academy, the North American Junior Hawks and Eagles Elite!

I can officially say I LOVE WHAT I DO! I love everything hockey can teach to an individual, I love how a girl’s confidence and self-esteem goes through the roof when I step on the ice with them, I love watching them smile and have fun playing. I love watching them succeed but I love watching them fall down and get right back up to try again!

I LOVE WHAT I DO AND I ENCOURAGE ALL MY PLAYERS TO LOVE WHAT THEY DO!

“It is my mission to be a role model, mentor and coach for upcoming driven female athletes.
I will work to be the best resource for you through your development stages &
help you reach your goals of playing at the next level”

Sincerely,
Toni Ann Miano
